Julie Pickrel

Julie Pickrel. MPH, serves as the Evaluation Manager for the San Diego Prevention Research Center, where she conducts center-level evaluation activities, as well as overseeing the evaluation of the Familias Sanas y Activas core research project. Ms. Pickrel has worked on a variety of physical activity research studies over the past 10 years. As Measurement Coordinator for the San Diego field site of the multi-center TAAG project, she served on numerous study-wide subcommittees and working groups that shaped the process and outcome evaluation of the project. She successfully managed the collection of objective and self-reported data with a total of nearly 1700 adolescent participants over three data collection phases. Her participant recruitment rates were consistently among the highest achieved in the study.

Ms. Pickrel was also responsible for developing the evaluation plan for the MOVE/Me Muevo project evaluating a physical activity and nutrition intervention in community recreation centers. More recently, in addition to her work on the SDPRC, Ms. Pickrel has moved forward with the TAAG 2 project, which combines GPS technology with accelerometry to investigate the impacts of the environment and travel patterns on older adolescent girls’ physical activity and eating behaviors.

As Project Manager of the San Diego field site for TAAG 2, she has taken a lead in the development and implementation of study-wide protocols and procedures for the timely and valid collection of GPS & activity monitor data.
