John P. Pierce, PhD

John P. Pierce, PhD, is the Sam M. Walton Professor for Cancer Research and is the Director for Population Science at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center. Dr. Pierce is a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology and the Society for Behavioral Medicine. Although his initial training was in Australia, his doctorate is from Stanford. He came to UCSD in 1990 after working with Surgeon General Koop in Washington DC.

He started the Cancer Prevention and Control program at UCSD in 1992 and the success of this program was critical to the Moores UCSD Cancer Center being named as one of the select few comprehensive cancer centers in the United States.

He has an international reputation for his work aimed at reducing the impact of both lung cancer (through reduced smoking) and breast cancer particularly through innovative interventions on lifestyle and environment to reduce risk of recurrent disease.
